Invisalign is giving teens a reason to smile more.

With the amazing advancements in orthodontic treatment and technology, teens no longer have to dread the idea of braces. In fact, our Rochester Hills, MI, pediatric dentists offer Invisalign, a completely clear solution that can close up gaps, fix crowding and give your teen the confidence they need while getting a straighter smile.

Wondering if Invisalign is right for your teen? Below are some FAQs about this popular treatment to help you understand more about it,

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a revolutionary way to straighten teeth, using clear trays that fit over teeth like a mouthguard. Through advanced 3D imaging and computer technology, we are able to map out the entire treatment process to create aligners that will give you the exact results you want.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign offers some pretty unique benefits including,

  • A completely clear treatment that most people won’t even notice
  • A set of aligners that fit comfortably and won’t irritate gum tissue
  • A removable treatment that allows you to eat what you want and to brush and floss your teeth as you normally do
  • Fewer trips to the dentist’s office during your treatment

How long with my Invisalign treatment take?

This will depend on the type of issues you are dealing with and how severe they are. Treatment can last anywhere from 6-18 months. Some teens may see results faster with Invisalign, but the length of treatment with Invisalign is usually comparable to traditional braces.

How often should I wear my aligners?

While being able to remove aligners can be a wonderful advantage of choosing Invisalign treatment, you don’t want to leave your aligners off for too long or you risk having to undergo an even longer treatment than originally planned. A good rule of thumb to follow is if you aren’t eating or drinking something and you aren’t about to brush and floss your teeth then you should be wearing your aligners.

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

Each aligner needs to be able to provide just the right amount of pressure to teeth to be able to shift them around. Therefore, the ideal candidate will be an older teen whose teeth have already fully matured. Invisalign is the perfect treatment option for both teens and adults who are dealing with crowding, crookedness, gaps between teeth and common malocclusions such as overbites and underbites.

Does your teen want to feel more confident in their appearance? If so, Invisalign may be the best solution for helping them achieve that perfect smile, and our Rochester Hills, MI, dentists are here to give your child and teen the orthodontic treatment they need. Getting braces early on could improve your child’s oral health for the long run.

Are you noticing that your child’s teeth are coming in a little crooked or that there are gaps between their teeth? If so, you may be braceswondering if it’s time to visit one of our Rochester Hills, MI, pediatric dentists for an evaluation. Most children can benefit from an orthodontic consultation around the age of 7. Besides getting a straighter smile, getting braces during childhood can also offer a variety of lesser-known health benefits, too:

Improve Chewing

Crooked, protruding or misaligned teeth aren’t as efficient at being able to chew food, so your child may experience some difficulties eating certain foods. As a result, this could lead to digestive issues and affect what foods your child does and doesn’t eat, which further impacts their nutrition and could lead to possible nutrient deficiencies. Correcting malocclusions (“bad bites”) will make it easier for your child to enjoy all of their favorite foods.

Prevent Speech Problems

If your child’s teeth are misaligned this can also affect their speech, leading to impairments or impediments such as lisps. By correcting these issues early on we can prevent these impediments from delaying your child’s speech and language development.

Reduce Damage to Teeth

If the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly when your child bites down this can end up putting more pressure on certain teeth. Over time, this leads to worn teeth that are weaker and prone to cracks, chips and fractures. One of the best ways to reduce your child’s risk for dental injuries is to place braces to correct their bite.

Reduce Cavity Risk

Teeth that overlap or crowd one another are more challenging to keep clean. While making sure that your child visits their dentist twice a year for cleanings will certainly help, the best way to prevent plaque and tartar buildup (which are responsible for cavities and gum disease) is to fix crooked, misaligned teeth with braces so that your child’s teeth are easier for them to brush and floss properly.

But my child is older than 7. Is it too late for them to get braces?

Absolutely not! While it’s recommended that children visit an orthodontist for a consultation at 7 years old, most dentists won’t start treatment until between the ages of 9-16. Our Rochester Hills, MI, children’s dentist will examine your child’s smile and from there be able to determine when treatment should start. Factors such as the type of treatment and your child’s physiological development will help us determine the best time to start treatment.

These days, orthodontic treatment is not just for children. Adults, too, enjoy the many benefits of well-aligned, attractive smiles. At Pediatric orthodonticsDentistry & Associates Specialists in Rochester Hills, your orthodontist crafts smiles which bite properly, look balanced and help people look their best. Would you like to know how orthodontics can help your smile?

Why orthodontics?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a complete orthodontic evaluation for all children by the age of seven. This early intervention helps your Rochester Hills orthodontist see problems before or as they develop. Then, he can leverage the fluidity of the young jaw to move teeth into more functional and attractive positions.

Your Rochester Hills Orthodontist carefully crafts care plans using a variety of appliances (palatal expanders, Invisalign aligners, metal brackets, arch wires, and more). He achieves excellent results comfortably and in as short a time as possible, using the latest in diagnostic, digital imaging, and treatment techniques.

How braces help smiles

Braces help smiles, and their owners, look good and feel great. The benefits of orthodontic correction include:

  • Increased confidence when speaking, smiling and laughing in public
  • Improved facial symmetry
  • Corrected bite, eliminating overbite, underbite, crossbite, openbite, protruding front teeth, gaps, spacing, tooth tipping, tooth rotation, and more
  • Teeth which are less crowded and therefore simpler to brush and floss
  • Reduced incidence of gum disease and tooth decay
  • Fewer oral accidents (chipped teeth or cut lips as examples)
  • Elimination of associated headaches and ear pain
  • Proper jaw joint function and growth
  • Proper eruption of adult teeth

Invisalign is a method of correcting teeth placement without the need for awkward metal braces. Although it is designed mainly for adults, Invisalignthis orthodontic treatment may be appropriate for certain teenagers, as well. Read on to learn how a dentist at Pediatric Dentistry & Associates Specialists in Rochester Hills, MI can help give your teen a brand-new smile!

Getting Braces
Braces support the teeth and help them shift into a more attractive and comfortable position. The classic method that dentists use for this procedure is the application of metal braces, which are composed of brackets attached to each individual tooth. As you can imagine, these traditional braces are easily noticed by others due to the contrast with your white teeth. Wearing braces can also be painful at the beginning of the treatment period and it’s difficult to chew normal foods. Invisalign is a different treatment option that addresses all of these concerns and challenges.

Invisalign for Teens
Invisalign isn’t always recommended for teenagers because they can’t always commit to wearing the trays on a regular and consistent basis. Young people have more of a tendency to take the aligners off during the day and forget to put them back on (or lose them). However, there is an option available to younger patients called Invisalign for teens that tracks their compliance. An indicator located at the far end of each aligner tray lets your Rochester Hills, MI dentist know if they are being used regularly, making the patient more responsible for keeping up with the treatment plan.

Give Your Teen a New Smile
When you’re a teenager, appearance often means everything. It can determine a number of factors that affect you in your youth and well into adulthood, including in social, educational, and professional spheres. Getting your teen Invisalign aligners is a smile investment that could significantly improve his or her confidence and future aspirations!

We can help you determine the best approach for getting your child a beautifully straight smile.

Orthodontic BracesThanks to advanced dental technology, our Rochester Hills dentists, MI, Dr. Arnold Tracht, Dr. Daniel Briskie, & Dr. Lisa Goldberg & Associates Specialists in Pediatric Dentistry offer several solutions for fixing crooked, misaligned smiles. If your child’s permanent teeth have started to grow in and you’ve noticed that their smile is a little twisted, crooked or problematic then it might be time to see how we can help straighten out these issues.

When should my child visit an orthodontist?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the best time to bring your child in for an orthodontic consultation is 7 years old. Of course, since your child will be visiting our Rochester Hills, MI, children’s dentist every six months for routine checkups we will be able to monitor their development to see if braces may be beneficial.

But 7 years old seems rather young, right?

Actually, this is the perfect age for us to conduct a thorough orthodontic consultation. Even though all of their permanent teeth haven’t come in yet we can still see how the smile is developing and detect certain issues early on such as an overbite, underbite or crowding.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will get braces right away or immediately after their consultation. We will continue to monitor their smiles until their molars come in. Once their 12-year molars come in we will be able to see how this affects the alignment of your child’s smile.

My child needs braces. Which kind is right for them?

We offer a few different options and the best type of braces for your child will depend on factors such as their age, lifestyle and the type of dental issues they are correcting with braces.

You can choose from:

  • Traditional metal braces: the standard stainless steel bracket-and-wire system
  • Clear braces: traditional brackets and wires that are made from tooth-colored material rather than metal
  • Lingual braces: metal braces that are attached to the back of your teeth
  • Invisalign: clear, removable aligners that are ideal for older teens

If you think your child could benefit from getting orthodontic treatment in Rochester Hills, MI, then call our pediatric dental practice today to schedule a consultation with us to find out which type of braces is ideal for them. Getting braces now could improve their oral health for the future.
